What Size Should Clipart Be for Shirts, Mugs and Cards? A 300 DPI Guide

Pixel sizes that print sharp on T-shirts, mugs, tote bags and greeting cards, why 300 DPI matters, and how to check a PNG before you print or upload it.

A design that looks crisp on screen can print blurry if the file is too small. The fix is simple: know how many pixels each product needs before you buy or place your clipart.

The one formula you need

Print size in inches × 300 = pixels needed.

300 DPI (dots per inch) is the standard for sharp print. A design printed 10 inches wide needs 10 × 300 = 3000 pixels across. Below about 150 DPI, edges start to look soft.

Sizes for common products

  • Adult T-shirt front: usually printed 10–12 inches wide, so 3000–3600 px. A 4500 px file gives you room to crop or enlarge.
  • Sweatshirt or hoodie: 11–13 inches wide, around 3300–3900 px.
  • 11 oz mug (wrap): about 8.5 × 3.5 inches, so 2550 × 1050 px for the full wrap area.
  • Tote bag: 10–13 inches, the same as a shirt.
  • A2 greeting card front (4.25 × 5.5 in): 1275 × 1650 px.
  • A4 or letter page: 2480 × 3508 px (A4) or 2550 × 3300 px (letter).

Most Little Loom Arts bundles are 4500 px wide at 300 DPI, which covers all of the sizes above. Check each listing for its exact size.

Why transparent PNG matters

A transparent PNG has no background, so the illustration sits directly on the shirt colour, card stock or mug. A JPG always has a solid background box around the art, which shows up as a white rectangle on coloured products.

How to check a file before printing

  1. On Windows: right-click the file, then Properties, then Details. Look at the width, height and resolution.
  2. On Mac: open the file in Preview, then Tools, then Show Inspector.
  3. In Canva: upload the PNG and drag it to the size you need. If Canva shows a low-quality warning, the file is too small for that size.

Using clipart with Cricut and sublimation

PNG clipart works with Print Then Cut in Cricut Design Space and with sublimation printers. It can't be used for vinyl cutting or embroidery, which need SVG or embroidery files.

Quick checklist

  • Work out the print size in inches and multiply by 300.
  • Use a transparent PNG for anything printed on colour.
  • Keep the original file and export a copy at the exact size the print shop asks for.
  • Read the license to check that your product type is allowed.
